How to Become a Graphic Designer

By August 21, 2018Uncategorized

What is Graphic Design?

Think of graphic designers as a type of artist.  They use digital software to create images, text,  and logos that convey a message. Because this plays a key role in marketing, designers are hired for all kinds of different projects. Many graphic designers work in a firm, but they may also independently freelance.

Graphic designers create content for the media. This can include books, magazines, newspapers, websites, webpages, logos, packaging, the list goes on.

Because many universities offer graphic design programs, it’s not too difficult to find a school to earn a bachelor’s degree. Courses one would take in a design program include studio art, principals of design, computerized design, printing techniques, web design, and commercial graphics. More in depth art classes may also be included, such as color theory. Some even go on to earn a masters degree.

If you did not obtain a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, you can seek technical training from peers or through an internship. Many designers begin with an internship, degree or not. Internships allow designers to gain deeper learning while working with a team. This is helpful because there are different programs and software used. Throughout their careers, designers will have to continue to learn these programs and software as they change. There are also many different areas of graphic design, so an internship allows the designer to gain more experience in a specific field.

Much of the process uses technology, but it is also important for designers to have strong artistic skills. Designers should practice their craft, and stay updated on trends.

It is also important for graphic designers to always maintain an updated portfolio. This allows designers a professional way to showcase their work and who they are as an artist. This also allows clients a fast and easy way to determine if they are right for the job.

According to Glassdoor, the average salary for a graphic designer in the U.S. is $48, 256 per year. Senior graphic designers with more experience make $58,804 per year. Freelance designers make slightly more at $60k per year. The income made also depends on the field of design. Jobs in specialized design services, advertising, and public relations typically earned the most money. Job in newspaper, publishing, and printing typically earned the least.

Salary also depends on location. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, graphic designers in New York, Maryland, Connecticut, and California earned the highest salaries in 2014.

As companies and brands continue to increase their digital presence, the demand for graphic designers continues to grow. Employment for graphic designers in computer systems designs is expected to grow by 20% over the next eight years. But designers who work in print and publishing are also expected to decline by 22% . This is because print and publishing are declining in popularity as companies and brands transition with a more tech advanced society. Books, magazines, and newspapers are now available online and through apps. It is project that by 2026, there will be 278,800 graphic designers in the workforce. This would be a 5% increase from 2016 when there were 266,300 graphic designers.

Overall, the demand and supply of graphic designers both continue to grow. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of if you are looking for a career that allows you to use your creativity, tech skills, or artistic abilities.
